The commons refers to the cultural and natural resources that are meant to be accessible to all members of society, such as air, water, seeds, soil and a habitable earth. These resources are meant to be held in common, not owned privately.
This is our common wealth. It is humanity's inheritance to be used and enjoyed by everyone.
And yet the gaps are stark and the contradictions glaring.
But we can change that.
The commons can also be defined as a social practice of governing a resource by a community of users that self-governs the resource through institutions that it creates.
Basic services such as water, electricity and the internet do not belong in the private domain. They are shared resources that are meant to be accessed by everyone.
Pooled, community-owned resources put people first.
We must rebuild the community commons, one project at a time.
Getting to and from school is an epic journey by foot for countless children, while accessing medical care and supplies is a real challenge for the elderly, the poor and people with disabilities.
Access to education and healthcare must include the means for people to travel to schools and medical facilities.
